QCM Design receives EASA STCs for UA Flight Management System Upgrades

QCM Design is thrilled to have developed and engineered two EASA Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for two types of Universal Flight Management Systems (FMS), UNS-1Lw and UNS-1Ew, for Learjet 60. Additionally, one of the STCs includes an ADS-B OUT upgrade with Collins TDR-94D transponders.

Overall, these upgrades enhance the safety, efficiency, and accuracy of a flight, by allowing for easier interpretation and data entry, and more accurate position information and navigation using SBAS GPS.

And with regulations defining certain minimum performance criteria for aircraft to be able to operate at certain altitudes, fly to certain airports, etc., upgrades to the FMS are necessary to ensure that you can continue to fly older Learjet 60s to the locations you want to.

“For the Learjet family, these [STC] packages provide an efficient way of upgrading your aircraft to ensure it remains operational and compliant into the future”, says Christian Schusser, CEO of QCM Design.

The key features of Universal FMS include:

  • pilot-friendly approach to altering flight plans
  • real-time fuel management, eliminating unnecessary fuel stops
  • access to extensive navigation databases
  • quick, efficient ways to upload data
  • en route navigation, allowing for greater accuracy during complex procedures e.g. holding patterns, heading to altitude, and more.

These two STCs are valid for Learjet 60, and are applicable to aircraft with the following configurations:

    • Dual Universal UNS-1B(+) or UNS-1C Flight Management System
    • Dual Collins Proline 4 Flight Display System

STC 10083800 Certification | UNS-1Lw Upgrade

This upgrade involved replacing the existing Dual Universal UNS-1B FMS with the Dual Universal UNS-1Lw SBAS-capable FMS, enhancing position accuracy throughout various flight phases and adding RNP-1 capability. This upgrade applies to aircraft with specific configurations, including the Dual Collins Proline 4 Flight Display System and other specified components. The modifications entail replacing NCUs, GPS sensors, SCDUs, DTUs, and GPS antennas to accommodate the new system.

The objective is to improve position accuracy by accessing SBAS satellites and providing reliable position data to the transponder system, thereby enhancing safety and navigational capabilities. Additionally, the upgrade adds RNP-1 capability, further improving the aircraft’s navigation performance. Overall, these changes will enhance the aircraft’s readiness for modern airspace requirements and improve its overall operational efficiency.

Universal UNS-1Lw FMS | SBAS-Flight Management System

The Universal UNS-1Lw FMS enhances overall aircraft navigation and performance, enabling more efficient and safe flight operations. This system integrates key components including a cockpit-mounted FPCDU and a remote Navigation Control Unit (NCU) with configuration module and internal SBAS GPS sensor. Additionally, it interfaces with a dual Universal 5’’ FPCDU and a solid state data interface unit (SSDTU) to ensure seamless operations.

Key Features of this FMS upgrade include:

  • Enhanced Navigation: The UNS-1Lw FMS boasts an internal WAAS receiver compatible with Satellite Based Augmented Systems (SBAS) such as WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, and GAGAN, ensuring accurate and reliable navigation.
  • Comprehensive Database: The system includes an updateable worldwide navigation database within the FMS CDU, featuring SIDs, STARs, GPS approaches, and more, facilitating smooth navigation and instrument approaches.
  • Integrated Control: With Level C main operating software (SCN 1002.X), the FMS provides centralized control over navigation sensors, flight planning, and fuel management, enhancing pilot efficiency and safety.
  • Hardware Partitioning: The FMS is designed with hardware partitioning to separate critical functions, ensuring robustness and reliability. This setup prevents adverse effects on operation and enhances software safety.

STC 10082167 Certification | UNS-1Ew Upgrade

The upgrade aimed to enhance situational awareness and compliance with future EASA requirements. This includes implementing ADS-B Out capability and upgrading the Flight Management System (FMS) for SBAS Upgrade with LPV approaches. The change involves replacing the existing FMS with the dual Universal UNS-1Ew system capable of receiving SBAS signals, along with upgrading GPS antennas to meet TSO-196 standards. Additionally, the installation of new LPV LOS warning lights and ADS-B Out transponders will further enhance safety and compliance.

The objective is to improve precision and reliability in position information, facilitating RNP and LPV procedures. The ADS-B OUT capability will also enhance situational awareness by transmitting information periodically without manual input. The ADS-B OUT capabilities is achieved by the further implementation of the Collins TDR-94D transponders. Overall, these upgrades will ensure the aircraft’s readiness for future airspace mandates while improving safety and navigation capabilities.

Universal UNS-1Ew FMS | Embedded SBAS-FMS

The Universal UNS-1Ew Flight Management System integrates a cockpit-mounted NCDU with a configuration module and internal SBAS GPS sensor, providing a comprehensive solution for acquiring, processing, and displaying crucial navigation information.

As well as the Required Navigation Performance (RNP 1) capabilities of the UNS-1Lw FMS, the UNS-1Ew FMS has additional Localiser Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) capabilities and Level of Service (LOS) enunciators.

Key features and benefits of this FMS upgrade:

  • Built upon a robust core hardware and software design, the UNS-Ew model incorporates an internal WAAS receiver compatible with various Satellite Based Augmented Systems (SBAS), ensuring precise navigation.
  • Featuring an updateable worldwide navigation database, the system offers optimal computed position from optional scanning DME and VOR interfaces, along with GPS sensors, facilitating accurate navigation along programmed flight plans and instrument approaches.
  • Operated via Level C main operating software (SCN 1002.X), the FMS serves as a fully integrated navigation management system, empowering pilots with centralized control over navigation sensors, flight planning, and fuel management.
  • Utilizing hardware partitioning, the FMS separates critical functions to ensure operational reliability and safety. With dedicated hardware and processors, the precision approach subsystem is isolated from other functions, enhancing performance and stability.
